Staten Island, NY – The Wagner Seahawks battled to a scoreless tie against a tough Central Connecticut State team in their third Northeast Conference game of the season today at Wagner Stadium.
Both teams played a physical first 45 minutes, with each team having few scoring opportunities. The Blue Devils led the way in shots, testing
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) twice, but the freshman keeper was equal to the task. Wagner, who had two corner kick opportunities failed to turn a shot on goal, as both teams headed into the halftime break tied at zero.
The Seahawks had the games first quality scoring chance 12 minutes into the second half when
Briana Vassallo (SaddleBrook, NJ) turned on a Blue Devil defender and blasted a shot from 20 yards out that rang off the crossbar.
Just seconds later, a loose ball off a deep thrown in by
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ) came to the feet of
Jessica Balling (Seaford, NY). The senior struck a right footed shot that sailed just high, keeping the score even at zeros.
The Blue Devils had their best scoring chance of the game with 11 minutes remaining in regulation when Beth Lloyd played a through ball past the Wagner defense to an on-running Brittany Jackson. The junior tried to slot her breakaway shot to the lower right side, but Marcy's aggressive sliding effort denied the forward of scoring her first goal of the year.
Minutes after Jackson's scoring chance, Central's Kerriann Welch rifled a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that struck the crossbar and deflected out of danger.
Both teams battled in the remaining minutes of regulation, but neither team could find the net, as the Seahawks prepared for their second straight overtime match.
The Blue Devils controlled possession in the first 10 minute overtime period, earning four shots, but none finding the back of the net.
Lloyd had the games best two chances in the second overtime period, as she stepped over the ball on two direct kick opportunities. But the league's leading scorer couldn't capitalize on either attempt, as the score ended at zeros.
Marcy ended the day making seven saves, while Central's Jamie Trayer recorded one. With the draw, the Seahawks move to 4-7-2 and 0-1-2 in the conference, while the Blue Devils end the weekend with a 4-7-1 mark and 0-2-1 in the NEC.
Wagner hits the road for its next three contests, beginning at Fairleigh Dickinson on October 8. Game time for that match is slated for 7:00 pm.
