Bad Break Gives Wagner Its Second Straight OT Loss

Box Score

Staten Island, NY –
An overtime goal by Monmouth's Alexandra Baca gave Wagner its second straight extra-time loss, as the Seahawks fell to the NEC opponent, 1-0, on senior day at Wagner Stadium.

Wagner began the day on its heels with the Hawks forwards bearing down on the backline from the opening kickoff. Monmouth's controlled possession slowed down the Wagner offense, while producing 13 shot attempts for the visiting Hawks.

Wagner's goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) did all she could to keep the game scoreless, making six saves in the first 45 minutes of play. The freshman's biggest stop came with just over nine minutes remaining after a blast from Monmouth forward Mary Wilks was headed just inside the left goalpost, before a diving Marcy pushed the shot off the post, which was then cleared by her supporting defense.

The Seahawks two first half shots were easily collected by Monmouth goalie Lia Fierro, who denied opportunities by both Wagner forwards Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY) and Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ) to keep the game tied at zeros heading into the halftime break.

The second half started much like the first as the Hawks continued their offensive attack. Marcy was forced to make another six saves in the second, totaling a career-high 12 saves on the day before the start of overtime.

Monmouth went into the first 10-minute overtime period with a 26-3 shot advantage, preventing the Seahawks from putting a single shot on goal in the second half. The Hawks also earned five more corner kick opportunities in the second session, while the Green and White had just one.

Just over three minutes in, the Hawks sealed the win as a shot from Baca hit off a Seahawk defender and caromed into the back of the net before Marcy could react. The unfortunate goal gave Wagner its second straight overtime loss, as the Seahawks fall to 6-11-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the Northeast Conference. The win gives Monmouth a 9-6-2 record with a 4-3-2 mark in NEC play.

Marcy ended the day with a career-best 12 saves, while Fierro's two first half saves were all she would have to make.

The Seahawks will hit the road next weekend to wrap up their regular season, traveling to Robert Morris on Friday and St. Francis (PA) on Sunday.

NOTE: Prior to today's game, the Seahawks honored their six graduating seniors who played in their last regular season home game. Samantha Schueschner, Briana Vassallo, Whitney Prindible, Catherine Del Medico, Jessica Balling, and Ashley Rastello were joined by friends and family who came together to acknowledge their hard work and dedication to the Wagner soccer program.
