Vigliotti's First Goal
Staten Island, NY – Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY) scored her team-high seventh and eighth goals of the year in dramatic fashion, as the Seahawks knocked off Northeast Conference foe Bryant 2-1 in double overtime today at Wagner Stadium.
The Seahawks wasted no time controlling the tempo of the game, as they tested the Bryant backline within the first few minutes. After being awarded a free kick, sophomore
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ) played a 30-yard ball into the heart of the penalty area. A fellow second-year starter, Vigliotti then picked up the loose ball and blasted a shot into the left side netting, giving the Green and White an early 1-0 lead.
Wagner nearly had its second goal of the game when freshman
Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY) came off the bench and immediately made an offensive impact, as she rifled a left footed shot off the crossbar with her first touch.
As the teams entered the halftime break, Wagner's keeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) and Bryant's Lauren Viverito had each recorded one save on six shot opportunities from each team.
Bryant evened the score in the 56th minute off their third corner kick of the game when freshman Ari Goldberg curved her corner to the near post. Sophomore Jennifer Harding timed her run well enough to connect her head on the free kick, placing the shot past Marcy to tie the game at on apiece.
The Seahawks pushed to regain the lead as minute's later sophomore
Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ) sprung forward
Briana Vassallo (Saddle Brook, NJ) on a long breakaway pass. While battling the Bulldogs last defender, Vassallo got off a strong right footed shot that was headed for the far side of the goal, but Viverito made a crucial sliding save to keep the score tied at ones.
Wagner's relentless pressure in the latter part of the second half, transitioned into the teams second quality scoring opportunity of the period as
Jessica Balling's (Seaford, NY) header on the back post was denied by Viverito.
In the final five minutes of the frame, Viverito was called upon to make another diving save when she gathered up a Nicholas breakaway shot ending the regulation time offensive action.
Heading into their fourth overtime game of the year, the Seahawks were dead even on the score sheet with the visiting Bulldogs, with each team earning 11 shots and two corner kick opportunities.
Neither team could muster up anything drastic in the first 10-minute overtime period, as the teams prepared for a second and final OT session.
Four minutes into the second overtime, Nicholas darted down the left flank and crossed a ball into Vassallo, who one-timed a shot that rang off the cross bar. The rebound bounced straight down to Vigliotti, who placed her shot into the open net to give the Seahawks their first overtime win of the year.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 6-9-2 and 2-2-2 in the Northeast Conference, while the Bulldogs drop their first conference game, falling to 3-1-1 and 6-7-2 overall.
Wagner will have a much deserved week off before hosting its last two regular season games of the year next weekend, when Mount St. Mary's and Monmouth come to Wagner Stadium.
