Fairfield, CT – The Pioneers of Sacred Heart University snapped the Seahawks three-game unbeaten streak Sunday, knocking off the visiting Green and White 2-0 in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Sacred Heart produced the games first scoring chances, earning two corner kicks in the first 22 minutes of the game. The Pioneers used their offensive momentum to capitalize on their first shot on goal, when a shot by Samantha Kee found its way by Wagner keeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) in the 13th minute, giving Sacred Heart the early lead.
The Seahawks applied some pressure in the last few minutes of the first half, with
Lauren Goodhue (Independence, NJ) taking a shot on goal, but was turned gathered up by Meghan Reichelt. Minutes later, the Wagner earned a corner kick, but couldn't finish, as they remained down a goal heading into the second half.
Wagner came out in the second frame eager to get on the board, with
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ) testing Reichelt twice in the first 17 minutes and stepping over a corner kick chance. The Pioneer defense was able to calm any rush by the Seahawks though, as they carefully protected their one goal lead.
Heather Quevillion increased the Sacred Heart lead in the 65th minute when she found the back of the net, scoring her second goal of the season, and giving the home team an important two goal advantage.
Keown and
Jessica Balling (Seaford, NY) tried to get Wagner back in the game late in the second half, but Reichelt was dialed in to earn her second shutout of the year.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 5-8-2 on the season and 1-2-2 in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart improves to 6-4-3, with a 2-1-1 mark in the league with the win.
The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, October 13, when they play at Ivy League representative Pennsylvania in a midseason non-conference matchup. That contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm in the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, PA.
