Hart Sets Pool Record as Seahawks Fall to Rhode Island, 114-148

Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College women's swim team dropped a hard-fought battle to the Ram's of the University of Rhode Island this afternoon by a score of 114-148. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 5-5 overall, 4-0 in the Northeast Conference. 

Leading the way for the Green & White were senior co-captains Jessica Hart (Montreal, Canada / Northwest) and Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT / Chesire), notching a pair of first-place finishes in their respective events. Hart's first win came in the 200 butterfly, marking a pool record with a time of 2:06.45. Hart garnered her second victory in the 100 butterfly, touching in at 57.56. Rodriguez-Lapman took the top-spot in the 1000 freestyle and 200 IM with respective times of 10:56.04 and 2:16.00. 

Sophomore Jakki Guenther (South Hadley, MA / South Hadley HS) received the Seahawks last first-place finish in the 100 backstroke with her time of 1:01.58. 

Wagner also received six second-place finishes in the 14 event competition. Their first second-place finish came in the 400 medley relay with a mark of 4:05.31. The relay team consisted of Guenther, sophomore Patricia Gavin (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech), Hart and freshman Amber Weech (Nassau, Bahamas / Saint Augustine's). 

In the 200 freestyle, junior Sarah Plucinsky (Allentown, PA / Allentown Central Catholic) notched a second-place with her time of 2:02.50. Hart also earned second in the 100 freestyle (55.42) while Guenther took second in the 200 backstroke (2:13.85) and 200 IM (2:17.57). Gavin completed the Seahawks list of second-place finishers with her time of 2:32.46 in the 200 breaststroke. 

"While we obviously would have liked to come out with a win today, I am extremely proud of the way our athletes competed,” said Head Coach Mark Sowa. “We swam tough and battled hard in each of the events. The coaching staff was very pleased with the teams focus and we saw some signs of how we want be in a couple of weeks. Jessica's pool record was pretty encouraging as well." 

Wagner returns to action Saturday, January 30th when the Seahawks host Central Connecticut State University in a dual meet at 4:00PM.
