Abramoski Leads Men’s Golf at Cornell Invitational

Junior Thomas Abramoski

Ithaca, NY- The Wagner College men's golf team finished 15th last weekend at the rain-shortened Cornell Invitational, contested at the par 72, 6,855-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Junior Thomas Abramoski (Poughkeepsie, NY / Our Lady of Lourdes) was the Seahawks' top finisher, leading the way by recording a tie for 17th-place in the field of 79 competitors.

Due to inclement weather, the scheduled 54-hole tournament was reduced to 36 holes. Abramoski led the Seahawks by recording a two-round total of 151 (74-77) in registering his top-20 finish. The junior currently leads the team with a 76 average on the season.

Sophomore Steve Nakajima (Delta British Columbia, Canada/ Delta Secondary School) finished tied for 62nd with rounds of 81-81-162 while junior Connor Popp (Syracuse, NY / Westhill) took 70th-place with rounds of 86 and 79 (165). Other Seahawks that competed were freshman Chris Mathewson (Amsterdam, NY / Amsterdam) , who finished tied for 75th with scores of 88 and 84 (172) while junior Brian Conlan (Highland Mills, NY / John S. Burke Catholic) finished with a 186 on rounds of 88 and 89.
"We were very fortunate to have been invited to play in such a highly regarded invitational with some of the best teams in the Northeast,” said assistant coach Chris Fourman. “While we are disappointed with our finish in relation to the rest of the field, we definitely had some positives to take from the event. First, and foremost, Tom put together 36 holes of very solid golf on the toughest golf course on our schedule. He was tied for third after the first round with his 74, and that was quite impressive. Also, our lone sophomore, Steven Nakajima put together two consecutive rounds around 80, and while I know he is disappointed with himself he is very much on the verge of putting all of the pieces together. Lastly, by playing in this event we were able to measure ourselves against some of the very best programs in the Northeast. While our overall finish does not reflect success, our ability to hang within range of some of these very good programs illustrates that we are growing and have the potential to succeed in the coming tournaments."

Overall, Binghamton paced the competition, finishing in first-place with a team score of 590. Bucknell took second, carding a score of 597 while Delaware garnered third-place with a 599.

The Seahawks return to action Friday, October 9when they travel to Egg Harbor, NJ to compete in the ECAC Championships.
