GAME 1
GAME 2
Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College softball team lost a pair of Northeast Conference (NEC) games this afternoon to Monmouth University at the Lower Athletic Field. The Seahawks were blanked by the Hawks 4-0 in game one of the twin bill before losing by an 8-3 count in the nightcap.
In game one, the Seahawks were unable to produce a single run as Monmouth's Melissa Mehrer held the Green & White to only six hits. The Hawks' four runs were scattered across the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings.
Wagner came close to breaking the shutout in the top of the fifth as the Seahawks loaded the bases on two hits and a Monmouth error. Monmouth's defense would hold the Seahawks at bay, retiring the Green & White without incident.
Freshman
Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) took the loss, dropping her record to 5-10. The hurler pitched the entire 7.0 innings while fanning two and allowing just two earned runs.
In the nightcap, the Hawks jumped out to a four-run lead in the second inning, plating runners on a home run, a single, and two Wagner miscues. The Seahawks earned a run back in the bottom of the frame on a stolen base by senior
Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic).
In the bottom of the fourth inning, senior
Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) halved the Hawks' lead, lacing a home run over the center field fence, bringing the score to 4-2.
The Hawks notched a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning, scoring on a single to right field and a passed ball. The Green & White responded in the bottom of the stanza with two outs and two runners on base. Freshman
Laura Hennig (Dyer. IN / Munster HS) stepped up to the plate and knocked a hard single straight up the middle, driving in junior
Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville). Unfortunately for the Seahawks this would be their last run scored as Monmouth extended its lead in the seventh, driving in runs on a sacrifice fly and a groundout to shortstop.
In the circle, junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) fell to 4-9 through 5.2 innings of strong pitching. The right-hander managed to strike out six batters while allowing just two earned runs.
At the plate, Lazzari went 3-4 with one RBI on her home run. Hennig also made a contribution, going 2-3 with an RBI.
The Seahawks (12-20, 1-5 NEC) return to action on Friday, April 10 when the travel to Fairfield, CT to face NEC foe Sacred Heart University. Game one is set to start at 1:00 PM
