GAME 1
GAME 2
Bronx, NY- The Wagner College softball team concluded their season with a pair of games Tuesday afternoon at Fordham University. In game one, the Seahawks' late rally in the seventh inning fell short by a score of 8-5 before the Rams claimed game two, 8-1.
In the first game of the twinbill, the Green & White plated four runs in the top of seventh but could get no closer, falling 8-5.
Fordham took an early lead in the beginning of the contest, notching a run in the first and second innings. In the top of the third inning, Wagner halved the Rams' lead on junior Kate Eshelman's (Reno, NV/ McQueen) sacrifice fly to center field, scoring freshman Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS). Fordham responded in the bottom of the inning by extending its lead out to 7-1. The Rams' runs came off a pair of RBI singles, a Wagner miscue and a two-run single. Fordham notched one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning on another Seahawk miscue, making the score 8-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, Wagner made a late charge, striking for four runs on four hits. Sophomore Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) led off with a home run over the right field fence before Lenart reached on a double down the left field line. Sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) knocked in junior Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley), who pinch ran for Lenart, with a ground out to second base, bringing the score to 8-3. Senior Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) capped the scoring with a two-run home run. This rally would not be enough as the Rams claimed an 8-5 victory.
Freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) received the loss following 6.0 innings of action, dropping to 11-15. The right-hander pitcher fanned one batter while allowing just one earned run.
Lazzari's home run was the 34th of her illustrious career, putting her in the No. 1 spot on Seahawks' all-time career home run list. In the game, the senior went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Eshelman also had a solid game, going 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Wagner would knot the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning but fell short in the remainder of the contest. The Rams rattled off seven unanswered runs.
Fordham jumped out to a one run lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on a single to right center.
With two outs and a runner on first, Pierce tied the game with a RBI double to right center, plating senior Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan), who reached on a walk.
The Rams answered back in the fifth and sixth innings, exploding out to a seven run lead. This lead would be enough to capture an 8-1 victory as the contest would end without incident.
Eshelman took the loss while falling to 6-12 following 5.1 innings of work. The junior struck out two batters while allowing six earned runs.
The Green & White finish with an overall record of 22-29 and 7-11 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
