Loretta, PA- The Wagner College softball team picked up a pair of wins this afternoon over Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Saint Francis University. In game one of the twinbill, the Seahawks garnered a 10-7 victory before completing the sweep in game two by a score of 6-1.
In game one, the Seahawks posted three runs in each of the first three innings, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. The Red Flash responded back in the third inning by scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame. Each team would score another run in the remainder of the game, contributing to Wagner's 10-7 victory.
The Green & White came out strong in the top of the first inning as senior
Andrea Lazzari's (Reno, NV / Wooster) laced a two-run home run over the left center field fence. Junior
Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville) followed with a solo home run over the left field fence, extending the Seahawks lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Red flash earned a single run back on a home run over the right field fence, bringing the score to 3-1.
In the top of the second inning, sophomore
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) led off with a triple down the right field line, putting the Seahawks in scoring position. Sophomore
Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) brought the score to 4-1, plating Corthell on a single down the left field line. With two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) extended Wagner's lead with a two-run single down the left field line.
With two outs and a runner on second base, Pierce drove in her second run of the day, plating freshman
Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) on a single through the left side. Lazzari capped off the inning with a two-run double to center field, scoring junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) and Pierce.
Saint Francis mounted a comeback in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs on a pair of home runs over the left field fence. In the bottom of the fifth, the Red Flash brought the game to 9-6 by scoring a run on a single to left field.
Wagner scored once more in the seventh inning on Eshelman's RBI double to right center, driving in Lenart. This lead would hold through the bottom of the inning, giving the Seahawks the win by a score of 10-7.
In the circle, freshman Kaeylnn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) improved to 11-13 following 7.0 innings of action. The RHP fanned four while allowing 12 hits.
Lazzari led the team going 4-4 with a two-run home run, four RBI, two runs and a double. Pierce and Garcia also contributed to the win with a pair of RBI each.
In the nightcap, Wagner garnered its second win of the day by holding the Red Flash to a single run en route to a 6-1 victory.
The Seahawks notched their first run in the top of the second inning, plating senior
Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic), who reached on a single to the shortstop, on a Red Flash error by the shortstop.
In the top of the fourth inning, Wagner extended its lead to 5-0, scoring four runs on five hits. With two outs and a runner on second and third, Eshleman made it 2-0 by scoring Lenart on a single through the left side. Lazzari followed with a two-run double to left field, driving in Eshelman and Pierce. deLancellotti capped off the inning with a RBI triple to left center, scoring Lazzari.
Green & White notched its last run in the sixth on Vanore's RBI single through the right side. The Red Flash responded in the bottom of the frame by scoring a single run on a ground out to third base.
Eshelman took the win following 7.0 innings of work, improving to 5-11. The junior struck out one while allowing just one run on four hits.
At the plate, Lazzari had another impressive showing going 4-5 with two RBI, two runs and a two-run double. Eshleman and Vanore had multiple hits while deLancellotti contributed with a RBI triple.
The Seahawks return to action tomorrow, April 26 when they travel to Moon Township, PA to face NEC rival Robert Morris in a doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
