Staten Island, NY-
The Wagner College softball team garnered an 11-0 win this afternoon over Iona College, blanking the Gaels in a game shortened to 4.5 innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

In the top of the first inning, the Seahawks jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs on one hit and an Iona error. Sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) scored Wagner's first run when she reached on a single and scored on an error by the second baseman. Sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single to left field, driving in junior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/ McQueen).

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second frame, Wagner exploded for nine runs on five hits in building the lead to 11-0. The Seahawks first two runs of the inning came via base on balls as Iona's pitcher walked senior Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) and junior Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville).

Garcia extended the Seahawks lead with a RBI single to the short stop, plating Eshelman. Senior Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) reached on a base on balls, walking in Lazzari for the six-run lead. Sophomore Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) propelled Wagner's lead on a two-run single to the pitcher, scoring Garcia and deLancellotti. Following a Gaels' pitching change, senior Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan) reached on a walk, scoring Vanore from third. Pierce capped off the decisive nine-run inning with a two-run single to right field, driving in freshman Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) and Corthell.

This lead would be enough to award the Green & White the 11-0 victory as the game ended by the eight-run mercy rule in four and a half innings.

Freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) earned the win following 5.0 innings of action, improving to 10-13. The RHP tossed a three-hit shutout while fanning four.

Pierce notched her seventh consecutive hit in three games, going 3-3 with two RBI. Garcia also had an impressive performance, going 2-3 with a pair of RBI.

The Seahawks (19-26) return to action on Saturday, April 25 when they travel to Loretto, PA to face Saint Francis (PA) in a Northeast Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 pm.
