Pierce Drives in Winning Run as Wagner Sweeps Lafayette; 8-2, 7-6

The Wagner College softball team garnered a pair of wins this afternoon against the Leopards of Lafayette College. In game one of the twinbill, the Seahawks defeated the Leopards by an 8-2 count before taking the nightcap by a narrow 7-6 margin. 

Following the doubleheader sweep, Wagner is now 18-26 on the season while the Leoards fall to 9-25.

In game one, the Seahawks' decisive six-run third inning gave the Green & White a lead from which the Leopards would not recover. 

In the top of the third inning, the Leopards notched two runs on a single and a Wagner miscue. This lead would not last for long as the Seahawks mounted a six-run comeback in the bottom of the frame. 

With a runner on second base, sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) started the Seahawk rally, plating freshman Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) on a RBI single to left center. Junior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) followed with a double to left center before senior Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/ Wooster) loaded the bases on a single to the short stop. 

Junior Amanda deLancellotti 's (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville) single to left field drove in the tying run, knotting the game at 2-2. Sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) gave Wagner the lead on a two-run double to left center, plating Lazzari and Eshelman. Senior Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) extended the lead out to 5-2 on a RBI single to right field, scoring deLancellotti. After a Lafayette pitching change, sophomore Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) capped of the inning with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Garcia. 

The Seahawks would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, extending their lead to 8-2. Wagner's runs came on Lazzari's RBI-double down the left field line and another deLancellotti single to left field. 

Freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) earned the win following 7.0 innings of action, improving to 8-13. The RHP fanned four while allowing six hits and one earned run. 

For the game Eshelman, Lazzari, deLancellotti and Vanore each had multiple hits while deLancellotti and Garcia recorded two RBI each. 

In the nightcap, Wagner fought tooth and nail with the Leopards before pulling it out in the seventh inning by a score of 7-6. 

Lafayette jumped out to a two-run lead early in the first inning, scoring on a single and a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the frame, Lazzari answered back by lacing a two-run home run over the left field fence, knotting the game at 2-2. The Leopards responded in the top of the second inning by notching another pair of runs off a two-run double to left field. 

The Leopards extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning, plating a single unearned run on a passed ball. In the bottom of the stanza, Wagner fired back, scoring a pair of runs on Pierce's and Eshelman's RBI singles. 

In the top of the fifth, Lafayette scored another run on a single to left field, bringing the score to 6-4. This lead would last until the bottom of the sixth when the Seahawks rallied back by scoring two runs on Lazzari's double to right field, tying the game at 6-6. 

With two outs and runners on first and third in the bottom of the seventh inning, Pierce stepped up to the plate and knocked the game-winning RBI single to left field, plating Vanore for the 7-6 victory. 

In the circle, Armenta picked up her second win of the day in improving her record to  now 9-13 , pitching 6.1 innings of relief action. The freshman struck out three while allowing seven hits and just three earned runs. 

At the plate, Lazzari went 2-4 with four RBI, a  double and a home run. The senior now has 48 doubles which puts her tied for first on Wagner's all time career leaders list while her 13 home run puts her in the No. 1 spot for single season records. Pierce also contributed significantly to the win, going 4-4 with two RBI and the game-winning single. 

Wagner returns to action tomorrow, April 22, when the Seahawks host the Yale University Bulldogs in a doubleheader at 3:00 pm. 

NOTE: Wagner's game against Iona, that was postponed on April 16, has been re-scheduled for Thursday, April 23 at 3:30 pm.
