Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College softball team picked up a pair of 10-2 wins this afternoon, claming both games by the mercy rule against Manhattan College. With the victories, the Seahawks improve their record to 11-17 while the Jaspers fall to 6-16.
In game one, Wagner came out strong, plating four runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner on second, senior
Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) put the Seahawks on the board with a double to left field, plating sophomore
Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista). Lazzari gave the Green & White a 2-0 advantage when she scored on an error by the Jaspers pitcher. Sophomore
Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) extended the lead with her single to left flied, scoring junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen). Senior
Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) capped off the inning, driving in Olsen on a well-executed bunt hit.
In the top of the second, Manhattan notched two unearned runs on a pair of singles, bringing the score to 4-2.
Wagner propelled its lead to 7-2 in the third inning, scoring three runs on two hits. With a runner on first, Vanore ripped a triple down the right field line, scoring Olsen. Sophomore
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) drove in the last two runs of the inning on a double to left center, scoring Vanore and freshman
Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS).
The Green & White seized the victory in the sixth inning. With runners on second and third, Eshelman knocked a double down the left field line, scoring Lazzari and senior
Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan). Vanore ended the game with a single to left field, plating sophomore
Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress Falls) for the 10-2 victory.
In the circle, freshman hurler
Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) picked up her fifth win of the season, improving to 5-8. The right-hander fanned four batters while not allowing a single earned run.
At the plate, Vanore led the Seahawks going 3-4 with three RBI and a run. Eshelman also was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs.
In game two, the Seahawks jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Eshelman knocked in the first run on a single up the middle, scoring in Corthell. Vanore extended the lead to 2-0, scoring Lazzari on a fielder's choice. Sophomore
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) made it 3-0 with a steal of home.
Manhattan cut the Seahawk lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the second.
In the fourth frame, the Seahawk extended their lead, driving in three runs on three hits. With runners on first and second, Olsen drove in Vanore with a pinch-hit double up the middle. Freshman
Laura Hennig (Dyer. IN / Munster HS) brought the game to 5-2, plating junior
Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville) with a sacrifice fly. Peirce capped off the inning with a single to short stop, scoring Olsen.
The Green & White sealed the win in the fifth inning driving in four runs off four hits, capturing the 10-2 victory. Eshleman knocked in Lazzari on a single to right field, bringing the score to 7-2. Vanore followed with an RBI single up to the middle, plating Garcia. deLancillotti extended the lead to 9-2 with a sacrifice fly, scoring Eshelman. Lenart locked in the win with a walk-off sacrifice fly, driving in Vanore for the winning run.
Junior
Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) extended her record to 3-0 with her 5.0 innings of action. The hurler struck out three while allowing two earned runs.
At the plate, Eshelman led the Green & White going 3-3 with two RBI and a run. Pierce went 2-3 with an RBI. Lazzari and Garcia both made their contribution going 2-3 with two runs each.
The Seahawks return to action Saturday, April 4 when they host the Mount Saint Mary's Mountaineers in a Northeast Conference double header. Start time is set for 1:00 pm.
