BOX SCORE
Hamden, CT – Junior RHP
Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) hurled 6.0 innings of shutout ball while senior RHP
Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) fired a scoreless seventh inning as Wagner snapped a seven-game losing streak at Bobcat Field with a 2-0 victory over Quinnipiac in the first of two games. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 12-13 and 3-4 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bobcats fall to 9-18 and 2-5 in the NEC.
Watson was masterful, limiting Quinnipiac to just three hits and three walks while retiring the leadoff batter in every inning. He was also aided by a solid defense that turned three double plays and is now 4-1 with a team-best 2.63 ERA over 27.1 innings of work.
The Green & White plated both of their runs in the top of the second, using four hits. Junior
Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) doubled to left field with one out. Sophomore
Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) followed with a bloop-single to center field, plating Conforti. Later in the frame, sophomore
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) singled to right center with two outs. Junior
Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) made it 2-0 Wagner with a RBI double to center, scoring Martutartus all the way from first.
Quinnipiac mounted a threat in the top of the fifth, placing runners on first-and-second with one out. Ben Farina was at the plate with a 2-0 count but was induced into an inning-ending double play by Watson.
Huebner entered in the seventh and allowed a bloop single to right before going to a full count with Gabe Guerino. On the ensuing pitch, Huenber coaxed Guerino into a lazy pop up that Boyd let drop, before turning the third Seahawk double play of the game that for all intents and purposes nullified any chance for a Quinnipiac comeback. Huenber then garnered his fourth save of the year, striking out Ryan Ullrich.
Martutartus led the seven-hit attack, going 2-3 with a run.
Mike Oskandy struck out four and yielded two runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.0 innings in falling to 1-5.
