GAME 2

Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College softball team garnered a pair of single-run wins this afternoon at a rainy Lower Athletics Field against the Bryant University Bulldogs. In the first game of the doubleheader , the Seahawks battled neck-and–neck with the Bulldogs en route to a 7-6 victory before coming out on top in game two, 5-4.

In game one, the Bulldogs struck first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bryant's runs came from an RBI double to right field, a single to left field and a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the frame, the Seahawks earned one run back when junior Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville) hit an RBI single to left field, driving in sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista).

In the bottom of the third inning, the Seahawks mounted a decisive four-run comeback to take a 5-3 lead. Wagner's first three runs of the inning came on three separate wild pitches, bringing the score to 4-3. Freshman Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) extended the Seahawk lead with a double to left field, driving in sophomore Christina Pinkus (Cohasset, MA / Cohasset).

The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer over the center field fence, tying the game at 5-5. Bryant would regain the lead in the sixth inning, knocking in a runner on a double to left field.

This lead would be short-lived as the Seahawks came back in the bottom of the inning, notching two runs on senior Andrea Lazzari's (Reno, NV / Wooster) single to center field. This lead would stand through the top of the seventh inning, as Wagner garnered the 7-6 victory.

In the circle, freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) earned her fourth win of the season following 7.0 innings of action. The right-hander fanned seven batters while allowing five earned runs.

At the plate, Lazzari led the Seahawks, going 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored. deLancellotti and Lenart made their contribution, recording one RBI apiece.

In game two, Bryant's early lead would not be enough to silence the Seahawks, as the Green & White battled back to take the win, 5-4.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the top of the first, scoring on an RBI double to left center and a three-run homer by Kim Leonard. Wagner earned a run back when Lazzari smashed a homer over the right field fence, bringing the score to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Seahawks captured the lead by plating four runs. With runners on first and second sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) got the Seahawks going with an RBI double, plating junior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen). Lazzari made the score 4-3 when she scored on a passed ball. Freshman Laura Hennig (Dyer. IN / Munster HS) drove in Garcia for the tying run on her single to left field. Wagner took the lead 5-4 on a throwing error by the Bulldogs' third basemen.

This lead would be enough to give the Seahawks the win as the Bulldogs were unable to muster another run through the final two and a half innings.

In the circle, Eshelman earned the win, improving her record to 3-8 with seven innings of work. The junior fanned three while allowing just six hits.

At the plate, Lazzari went 2-3 with two runs, one RBI and a home run. Garcia and Henning each went 1-2 with an RBI apiece.

The Seahawks (9-17, 0-2 NEC) return to action Thursday, April 2 when they host the Manhattan Jaspers in a non-conference double header. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
