Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College softball team dropped both games of a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader this afternoon against Long Island University. In game one, the Seahawks fell short by a score of 4-1 before losing by a 9-1 count in five innings in game two.
The Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead In the first game when junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) scored on an error by the Blackbirds in the first inning. This lead would hold until the top of the fifth inning when LIU plated two runs on a pair of RBI singles.
The Blackbirds extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning, notching a pair of runs, and Wagner was unable to muster an offensive rally the rest of the way. In the circle, freshman hurler
Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) dropped to 3-8, despite a solid 7.0 innings of work. The right-hander fanned two while allowing just two earned runs.
In game two, LIU's seven-run fifth inning propelled the Blackbirds to the 9-1 win.
LIU scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 2-0, before batting around and plating seven runs in the decisive fifth frame.
Wagner would load the bases up with one out in the bottom part of the frame, but could only manage one run, falling by the mercy rule 9-1.
Eshelman took the loss following 5.2 innings of action, dropping to 2-8.
The Seahawks (7-17, 0-2 NEC) return to action Sunday, March 29 with a doubleheader vs. the Bryant Bulldogs, a non-league foe. First pitch is set for Noon.
