Ambler, PA - The Wagner College softball team split a doubleheader today against Temple University at the Ambler Sport Complex. In game one the Seahawks defeated the Owls 4-2 before falling to Temple in the night cap, 4-3.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Seahawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on sophomore Hailey Corthell's (Reno, NV / Reno) three-run homer, and senior Andrea Lazzari's (Reno, NV / Wooster) RBI single.
With runners on first and third, Corthell gave the Seahawks the early lead when she smashed a three-run homer over the left field fence, plating senior Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) and sophomore Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy). Lazzari capped off the inning with her single up the middle, driving in sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) for the 4-0 advantage.
The Owls mounted a comeback in the fifth inning, knocking in a runner on a single up the middle by Christina Sykora. The Owls scored once more in the seventh inning on Amanda Carver's single up the middle.
Earning the win for the Green & White was freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS), improving her record to 3-7. The right-hander fanned one while allowing just one earned run.
In game two, the Seahawks battled back-and-forth with the Owls en route to a 4-3 loss. In the first inning, sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) put the Seahawks on the board, blasting a two-run homer over the left field fence, scoring Pierce and giving the Green & White a 2-0 lead.
The Owls responded in the third inning, tying the game on their own two-run homer by Courtney Norene. Wagner regained the lead in the fourth inning, as junior Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. Jacksonville) scored on a Corthell single up the middle, to give the Seahawks a 3-2 lead. The lead proved to be short-lived, however, s the Owls plated two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 victory. Temple's runs came on a single and a wild pitch.
Junior Kate Eshleman (Reno, NV / McQueen) dropped to 2-8 through her 5.2 innings in the circle.
At the plate, Garcia led the Green & White by going 2-3 with two runs and two RBI's. Corthell was also 2-3 while driving in one run.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, March 28 for their home opener, with a doubleheader vs. the Blackbirds of Long Island University at 1:00 pm. On Sunday, March 29, Wagner hosts the Bryant Bulldogs in a doubleheader that begins at Noon.
