Loudonville, NY – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team raced out to an early 4-1 lead before Siena answered with eight straight tallies en route to an 11-7 victory.
With the loss, the Seahawks fell to 1-5 on the season while the Saints improved to 5-1.
The Seahawks came out of the gates flying, scoring three goals in the first 13 minutes of the game. Senior attack
Kelly Blundin(Plymouth Meeting, MA/ Plymouth-Whitemarsh) put Wagner up 1-0 with 23:29 left in the first half off an assist from freshman midfielder
Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/Westhill). Sophomore attack
Karen Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY/ Skaneateles) made it a 2-0 game 1:19 later off a feed from senior midfielder
Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/Westhill). Junior midfielder
Janine Bright (Commack, NY/Commack) made it 3-0 with 17:36 remaining in the half off another Clark assist.
Siena's Lindsey Rosecrans put the Saints on the board with 12:10 to go in the half which was matched by Seahawk freshman
Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/Westview) at the 9:08 mark which restored the Wagner lead back to three at 4-1.
Caitlin Mikel found the mark for Siena with 6:27 to go in the half, a score that triggered an eight-goal spree that bridged the first and second halves. The score was tied 4-4 at the half before the Saints completed the eight-goal surge with five goals to open the second half which gave Siena a 9-4 lead.
Freshman midfielder
Lauren Petrik (Syracuse, NY/ Baldwinsville, NY) broke the scoring string, driving home a free position shot with 17:17 left in the game to cut the deficit to 9-5. Each team scored two goals the rest of the way with Bright and Gonzalez scoring the Wagner goals, the latter of which was assisted by Blundin. Gonzalez' tally with 6:05 to go drew the Seahawks to within three at 10-7 before Courtney Highsmith slammed the door with a goal with 5:09 to go which rounded out the game's scoring.
Siena led Wagner in shots (35-18), ground balls (33-27) and draw controls (22-9). Junior goalie
Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) had nine saves for the Seahawks while Kristin Concordia stopped seven shots for Siena.
The Seahawks begin NEC play on Friday, March 20 when they host Central Connecticut St. at 4:00 pm.
