Six-Run Rally Lifts Wagner Over Lafayette as Seahawks Gain Split

Kissimmee, FL- The Wagner College Women's Softball team split its two games today with a 7-2 loss to Rider University followed by a 10-6 win over Lafayette College. The win is the Seahawks' second victory in three games, and second time they have scored double digit runs in a victory. 

In game two, Lafayette jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first by scoring four runs. The Leopards runs came from a three run homer to right field and an RBI-single to the catcher.

In the top of the fifth, Pierce earned a RBI off a SAC fly to left field, scoring Corthell and bringing the score to 4-2. The Leopards fired right back in the bottom of the frame with a run off a SAC fly to center field.

In the top of the sixth, Wagner made a massive comeback, scoring six runs. Senior Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) got the Seahawks on track, starting off the inning with a home run that cut Lafayette's lead down to three. Garcia followed with a two-run RBI single up the middle, knocking in Vanore and junior Amanda deLancelotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville).Senior Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan) tied the contest at 5-5 with her RBI single to centerfield, driving in Corthell. Pierce brought the Green & White ahead by one with her ground out to shortstop, plating Garcia. Lazzari topped off the inning with an RBI single to left field, bringing in Bagnoli for the 7-5 advantage. The Leopards earned one run back in the bottom of the frame on a put out to first.

In the top of the seventh, the Green & White tacked on three runs, two of which came from home runs. Sophomore Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) recorded her first collegiate homer, a blast to left center. Corthell followed with her first home run of the season, sending the ball over the fence down the left field line. Pierce's single through the right side brought around freshman Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) which rounded out the Wagner scoring. In the bottom of the frame the Seahawks silenced the Leopards bats without incident, as the Seahawks held on for the 10-6 victory.

Junior Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley) was credited with the win, improving her record to 2-0. Freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA/Saint Paul) locked down the win with her first save. 

In game one, Rider took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, scoring runs on a pair of RBI doubles to left field. Wagner responded in the bottom of the frame, earning a run back on a fielder's choice RBI by senior Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic.), driving in Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno).

Over the last five innings, the Broncs would go on a 5-1 scoring spree, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage over the Seahawks. Rider's runs came via an RBI single up the middle, home run to left, an RBI single down the left field line, a SAC fly to center field and a stolen base.

The Seahawks notched their last run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista), plating sophomore Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno). Even though Wagner posted nine hits in the contest, the Seahawks fell to Rider by a final score of 7-2.

Junior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen) took to the mound in game one, tossing seven innings while allowing four earned runs and striking out eight.

The Seahawks return to action Wednesday, March 18 when they take on Army at 9:00 am and Manhattan at 11:00 am.
