Wagner Softball Split Day Three of the Rebel Games

Senior Andrea Lazzari
GAME 1
GAME 2

Kissimmee, FL -
The Wagner College softball team split a pair of contests this afternoon at the Rebel Games. In game one the Seahawks fell in extra innings to the University Rhode Island, 4-2, before coming out victoriously with an 11-6 win over Iona College.

In the first game of the day, Rhode Island came out on top in an eight-inning affair. Wagner struck first with a run in the bottom of the second when senior Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) singled to right field, brining around sophomore Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) for the 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the Rams tied the game at 1-1 on an errant Wagner throw.

In the eighth inning, on the international tie breaker, the Rams took a three-run lead on a RBI ground out and two more on a Seahawk error.

Wagner's comeback attempt fell painfully short in the bottom part of the frame. Sophomore Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) cut the lead to 4-2 with a RBI to left field, driving in senior Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan). Unfortunately for the Green & White, the Rams retired the next two batters, quelling the Wagner-threat while claiming a 4-2 win.

On the mound, freshman Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) dropped to 1-6, despite 8.0 solid innings of work. The California native struck out five while allowing no earned runs (4 unearned).

At plate, Pierce and Vanore each recorded one RBI to lead the Green & White.

In game two, the Seahawks came away with their first win of the Rebel Games, defeating the Iona College Gaels by a score of 11-6.

Iona struck first in the bottom of the first inning, knocking an RBI-double down the left field line. Wagner responded with a massive comeback in the top of the second by posting six runs while batting around, to take a 6-1 lead. The Seahawks' first run came on from junior Kate Eshelman's (Reno, NV / McQueen) two-run homer, which plated Vanore. The Green & White extended the lead to 3-1 when Bagnoli notched an unearned run off an error by Iona's first basemen. Lazzari capped off the inning with a deep three-run homer over the center field fence to drive in sophomore Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress Falls) and Pierce.

Iona cut Wagner's lead to two when the Gaels scored three runs in the bottom of the Frame.

In the fourth, the Seahawks added to the lead with two more runs on Lazzari's homer, a two-run shot to left field, plating Bagnoli while extending the lead to 8-4. The Gaels got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run RBI-single through the right side.

Bagnoli fired back in the top of the fifth with a single down the right field line knocking in Eshelman and Vanore.

Wagner sealed the game in the seventh when freshman Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) hit an RBI-double to left center, plating Eshelman. In the bottom of the inning Wagner's defense shut down the Gaels bats without incident in claiming the 11-6 win.

In the circle, junior Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) improved her record to 1-0 with 3.2 innings of work. Wagoner recorded one strikeout, and allowed three earned runs.

At the plate, Lazzari led the offense, going 3-4 with five RBI's, and two home runs. Eshelman and Bagnoli made their contribution with two RBI's each while Lenart had one.

The Seahawks (2-8) return to action Tuesday, March 17 when they face Rider (9:00 am) and Lafayette (11:00 am) on the fourth day of the Rebel Games.
