Kissimmee, FL - The Wagner College softball team fell short in day two of the Rebel Games, dropping the opener 6-5 to Yale University before losing the nightcap by a 9-5 count to Wisconsin-Green Bay, despite mounting a late rally.
In game one, Yale pulled out the win in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single to left field. The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning with a single to third driving in an unearned run. Yale notched another run in the third inning off an error by the Wagner catcher, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, sophomore
Ashley Olsen's (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) single to right field drove in
Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) to put the Seahawks on the board, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Yale responded by posting two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when the Bulldogs' Meg Johnson hit a home run to right field, driving in two runs.
In the top of the sixth, the Seahawks made their final move, plating four runs and taking a 5-4 lead. Freshman
Amanda Garcia's (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) RBI double to left center drove in senior
Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster), bringing the score to 4-2. Olsen followed with an RBI single, which scored Vanore. Garcia then notched a run off an error by Yale's centerfielder, tying the game 4-4. Senior
Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan) gave the Green & White the lead with a RBI single up the middle, plating Olsen.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs rallied back to take the win. With the bases loaded, Yale's Megan Enyeart hit a walk off-single, plating two RBI's and giving the Bulldogs a 6-5 victory.
On the mound, freshman
Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) was tagged with the loss, moving to 1-5 on the season. In Armenta's 6.1 innings pitched, she recorded four strikeouts and allowed four earned runs.
At the plate, Olsen, who is also a standout on the Wagner basketball team, led the Green & White by going two for three with two RBI's. Garcia and Bagnoli followed with an RBI each.
In game two, Wagner mounted a late rally in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough as the Seahawks fell to Wisconsin-Green Bay, 9-5. The Phoenix were first to score in the top of the third when Sarah Junion doubled down the left field line, plating two unearned runs. Wisconsin-Green Bay extended its lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with two home runs that plated two unearned runs a piece.
The Seahawks made their move in the sixth inning by plating three runs. Junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) put the Green & White on the board with a RBI single to left field, scoring sophomore
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno). Olsen knocked in Lazzari with a sacrifice fly to center field. Bagnoli capped off the inning with an RBI single up the middle, bringing in Eshelman and drawing the Seahawks to within three runs of the Phoenix.
In the seventh inning the Phoenix brought in three more runs off of an RBI single, sac fly to left field and an error by the centerfielder.
Still giving a valiant effort, Wagner managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh on the strength of home runs off the bats of Garcia and Lazzari.
On the mound, the tough-luck Eshelman took the loss in her 5.0 innings of pitching, dropping her record to 0-4. The junior recorded one strike out and allowed zero earned runs against 26 batters faced.
At the plate, Lazzari recorded her first home run of the season while going three for four with one RBI. Garcia notched her second home run of the season. Eshelman also stood out at the plate with a three for four performance and one RBI.
Wagner (1-9) returns to action at the Rebel Games, Monday March 16. The Seahawks will take on Rhode Island at 11:00 am and Iona at 3:00 pm.
