No. 18 Kent State Blanks Wagner 11-0

Sophomore Kyle Morrison
BOX SCORE

Rock Hill, SC –
No. 18 Kent State showed Wagner why the Golden Flashes are considered one of the top teams in the nation with an 11-0 win over the Seahawks at the Winthrop Ballpark. Kent State is now 4-0 while the Seahawks fall to 0-1.

Right-hander Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) began his junior season with a two-strikeout first inning. After Chris Tremblay drew a free pass to begin the game and reached second on a pass ball, Morrison struck out Ben Klafczynski swinging before picking off Tremblay at second. He concluded the opening frame by fanning Anthony Gallas swinging for his second K of the frame.

Junior Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) then walked to lead off the bottom of the first, but like Tremblay, was picked off to quell the Seahawks' first opportunity of the game.

Kent State began the second by loading the bases with nobody out. After a wild pitch scored Greg Rohan, Morrison struck out Brad Winter. Jimmy Rider's RBI ground out made it 2-0 Kent State before Morrison struck out Tremblay to end the threat and limit the damage to two runs.

The Golden Flashes would continue to threaten over the next few innings, stranding two runners in each of the third and fourth innings. Each time Morrison would shut down the potent Kent State offense, using seven strikeouts over the first four innings to keep it at a 2-0 game.

After Csakai was picked off, Hallock retired the next 10 batters in a row before sophomore Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) got the first Wagner base hit of the year, a two-out single to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth.

Kent State then broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs while batting around. Rohan, the reigning MAC Player of the Year, hit his third home run of the year, a two-run shot to center to make it 4-0. Morrison was relieved with one out and a runner on third. The Golden Flashes would score three more runs, including two on infield hits, to extend the lead to 7-0.

In the top of the seventh, the Golden Flashes added four unearned runs to fashion the final 11-0 tally. After a Jared Bartholomew sacrifice fly, Gallas hit a three-run home run.

Despite yielding 11 runs, Seahawk pitching struck out 12 Kent State batters, including seven by Morrison over 4.1 innings. He gave up five runs in falling to 0-1.

Hallock struck out three while yielding just one hit over 6.0 innings in moving to 1-0. The left-handed pitcher has now spun 10.0 scoreless innings to start the season.

Jamison went 1-2 with a walk while Csakai also drew a walk to lead the Wagner offense. Gallas and Rohan each belted home runs while Jason Patton went 3-5 to lead Kent State.
