Staten Island, NY – Robert Morris held off Wagner 61-49 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Spiro Sports Center. The Colonials improve to 13-14 and 9-6 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 7-19 and 3-12 in the NEC.
Despite the loss, the Green & White are mathematically still alive in the race for the NEC's eighth and final playoff spot. The Seahawks need to win its last three games while Mount St. Mary's would have to drop its final two NEC contests to have a chance. The two teams square off on Monday, February 23 at 7 pm in the Seahawks' final home contest of the year.
Playing its first home game in almost two weeks, Wagner started out the game slowly missing 16 of its first 17 shots while Robert Morris connected on 5-10 to jump out to an early 15-4 lead at the 12:19 mark. Freshman
Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ / St. Rose) stopped the bleeding with a pair from the line while beginning a 10-0 run that would span 3:42. Junior John'a Poole (Middle River, MD / Eastern Tech) and classmate
Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) followed with layups off of steals to make it 15-10 before Clark capped the run with a pair of layups to cut the deficit to 15-14 with 7:26 to play. Kendra Williams answered with a three pointer to begin a 6-0 Colonial spurt as the lead grew back to seven at 21-14 with 4:09 on the clock. The Green & White again answered with a half-ending 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 24-23.
After starting out the half 1-17 from the floor, Wagner closed the stanza by knocking down 9-19. Meanwhile, the Colonials limped into the half by shooting just 3-20 shooting to end the half. The Green & White assumed just their sixth halftime lead of the year thanks to only turning the ball over four times, compared with 10 by the visitors, while dominating the points in the paint to the tune of a 16-8 advantage.
After Reed gave Wagner its largest lead of the game at 26-23 with a layup to start the half, Sade Logan hit a triple with the shot clock expiring to trigger a 7-0 Robert Morris run that would make it 30-26 visitors. Later with the Colonials still up four at 39-35, the Green & White drew even with a layup from Clark and a Reed jumper to knot it up at 39-39 with 11:35 remaining. As they did all night, Robert Morris answered by scoring five-straight points to go in front 44-39 with 8:31 to go. Poole would briefly quell the Colonial momentum with a pair from the charity stripe only to see Robert Morris run off five-more points to make it 49-41 Robert Morris with 7:15 to play. Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) but was unable to get any closer as Logan knocked down a big three pointer to make it 52-44 with 5:20 to go. The Colonials would go on to outscore the Seahawks 12-5 to end the game to win going away 61-49.
Both teams shot the ball poorly, with Robert Morris checking in at 33.9 percent (20-59) and Wagner 30.3 percent (20-66). However, the Colonials knocked down 6-16 from long range while the Seahawks were 0-12. The Green & White did, however, turn the ball over a season-low 11 times while winning the battle of the paint (34-24).
Reed led the way for Wagner with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists while turning the ball over 40 minutes of action. Clark added 12 points and eight rebounds. Poole chipped in with seven points and five rebounds over a season-best 32 minutes of action.
Monet Johnson notched her sixth-straight double-double with 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds while Sade Logan scored a game-high 18 points and Kendra Williams added 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
