Piscataway, NJ- The Wagner College women's swim team fell in a head-to-head meet against the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights this afternoon by a 121-99 count. With the loss, the Seahawks move to 4-3 overall, 3-0 in Northeast Conference action.
The Green & White completed the competition with five first-place finishes out of the 12 events of the evening. Leading the way for the Seahawks was senior co-captain
Jessica Hart (Montreal, Canada / Northwest), notching first-place finishes in the 100 (57.12) and 200 (2:09.98) butterfly. Also garnering first-place marks were senior co-captain
Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT / Chesire) in the 500 freestyle (5:22.88) and sophomore
Patricia Gavin (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) in the 200 breastroke (2:35.64).
The Seahawks received its last first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:42.65. The relay team consisted of Hart, junior
Sarah Plucinsky (Allentown, PA / Allentown Central Catholic), freshman
Amber Weech (Nassau, Bahamas / Saint Augustine's) and sophomore
Lauren Meyer (Hamden, CT / Hamden HS).
In the 500 freestyle, freshman
Dana Samuel (Rivonia/ South Africa / Crawford College) finished with a second-place mark with her time of 5:34.63. Junior
Bethny Brown (Enfield, CT / Ennco Fermi High) also earned the team a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:44.09. Rounding out the Seahawks' second-place finishers was freshman
Alanna Gibbons (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) with her time of 1:01.98 in the 100 butterfly.
Wagner finished the meet with seven third-place finishes.
“The captains showed good leadership today,” said assistant coach
Rebecca Richards. “We will continue to be competitive against quality teams such as Rutgers. We look forward to getting some good training in when the team travels to Florida in January.”
Wagner returns to action tomorrow, December 5 when they host Columbia University in a dual meet at 1:00PM.
