Hart Sets Pool Record as Seahawks Earn Wins Over St. Francis (NY) and Sacred Heart

Brooklyn Heights, NY-The Wagner College swim team added two Northeast Conference (NEC) wins to their now 3-2 (3-0 NEC) overall record as they defeated the St. Francis (NY) Red Flash 76-19 and the Sacred Heart Pioneers 66-29. The Green & White walked away with five first-place finishes in the nine event competition. 

Senior co-captain Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT / Chesire) got Wagner its first win of the competition in the 1000 freestyle with her time of 10:57.38. In the second event of the meet, freshman Amber Weech (Nassau, Bahamas / Saint Augustine's) and junior Sarah Plucinsky (Allentown, PA / Allentown Central Catholic) swam to second and third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle with respective times of 2:02.49 and 2:03.24. In the 50 freestyle, senior co-captain Jessica Hart (Montreal, Canada / Northwest) garnered a second-place finish, clocking in at 25.41. 

Sophomore Jakki Guenther (South Hadley, MA / South Hadley HS) gave the Seahawks its second win of the day in the 200 IM with her time of 2:16.09. Following close behind Guether was freshman Alanna Gibbons (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) with a mark of 2:20.50. 

Hart broke a pool record in the 100 butterfly with her time of 58.53. Hart currently holds the NEC record time in the event with a time of 54.07, set last year. Gibbons finished third in the event, touching in at 1:01.87. 

In the 100 freestyle, Weech took second-place with her time of 56.29. In the 100 backstroke, the Seahawk finished one-two-three. Leading the way in the event was Guenther (1:02.67), followed by sophomore Breanne Sweeney (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) (1:03.25) and junior Caitlin Moore-Penaskovic (Dover, NH / Dover) (1:06.25). 

Wagner took its fifth and final first-place finish in the 500 freestyle. Rodriguez-Lapman paced the pack with her first-place time of 5:23.86. The Green & White finished the competition with second and third-place marks in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Bethny Brown (Enfield, CT / Ennco Fermi High) earned second-place with her time of 1:13.01 while sophomore Patricia Gavin (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) finished in third-place with a 1:15.21. 

"Today we were much better with our approach, focus, and competitiveness,” said head coach Mark Sowa. “Our senior leadership was great and the freshmen are starting to race with confidence. We need to build off some of the lessons we learned this weekend and continue to find ways to get better." 

Wagner returns to action Friday, November 13th when they host NJIT at 6:00 PM.
