Women’s Swimming Fall to Iona, 109-95

New Rochelle, NY- The Wagner College swim team lost its second meet of the season, dropping a dual meet to the Gaels of Iona College, 109-95. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-2 on the season. 

Sophomore Jakki Guenther (South Hadley, MA / South Hadley HS) led the Green & White with two first place finishes in the 200 IM (2:16.32) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.33). 

A pair of senior co-captains accounted for Wagner's last two first-place finishes. Jessica Hart (Montreal, Canada / Northwest) garnered first in the 200 butterfly after clocking in at 2:12.77. Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT / Chesire) swam to a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:21.47. 

The Seahawks had three second-place finishes in Harts performance in the 50 freestyle (25.49), freshman Alanna Gibbons' (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Tech) effort in the 200 IM (2:19.70) and junior Bethny Brown's (Enfield, CT / Ennco Fermi High) presentation in the 200 breaststroke. 

Wagner also notched five third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke. 

"We started off the competition a bit sluggish, but got better as the meet went on, " said head coach Mark Sowa. "We have some early season mistakes that need to work on. However, this group's competitiveness showed and we will continue to improve." 

Wagner returns to action today, Saturday, October 31 when they travel to Brooklyn Height, NY to compete in a tri-meet with Saint Francis (NY) and Sacred Heart. Start time is set for 1:00 PM.
