FINAL STATS

Emmitsburg, Md. –
Kelly Beidler recorded his fifth double-double of the season to lead streaking Mount St. Mary's past Wagner, 65-51, in Northeast Conference action (NEC) at Knott Arena on Saturday afternoon. Beidler tallied 11 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Mount to its eighth straight victory before a season-high crowd of 2,468.

The loss was Wagner's fifth straight and dropped the Seahawks to 10-11 on the season, 3-8 in the NEC while the Mountaineers improved to 13-7, 8-3 in the NEC.

Wagner trailed by just six points, 37-31, early in the second half before the Mount used a 12-2 run to take control of the game. Jeremy Goode started the run with a three-pointer, a lay-up and a free throw to give the Mount a 12-point advantage. Beidler and Markus Mitchell each added baskets before Goode closed the streak with a pair of free throws for a 49-33 lead with 11:57 left in the game.

The Seahawks responded with seven straight points to get back into the game at 49-40, but that would be as close as Wagner would get the rest of the way. Wagner was largely undone by cold shooting at the free throw line as Wagner made just 10-of-20 from the charity stripe. Conversely, the Mount hit 20-of-25 (.800) at the foul line.

Wagner was paced by fifth-year senior forward Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) and senior forward Llew Radford, who tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively. Radford recorded a team-high six rebounds for the Seahawks. Freshman guard Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/ Apex Academies) chipped in with seven points.

The Mount, which leads the NEC in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, held Wagner to 35.2 percent shooting in the game, including 25.9 percent in the second half. The Mount St. Mary's defense is allowing 48.3 points and 35.0 percent shooting over its past three games.

Goode finished with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win while Jean Cajou added 14 points and six rebounds in the game. Beidler added his double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds while Shawn Atupem added 10 points off the bench in the victory.

The Seahawks return to the Spiro Center on Thursday, Feb. 5 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson in a 7:00 pm. This will be the first of a two-game homestand as Wagner hosts Saint Francis (PA) on Sat., Feb. 7 in a 4:00 pm game that will be televised live on MSG.

Game Notes – Wagner College head coach Mike Deane accompanied the team on the trip to Maryland but was not on the sidelines as a result of his receiving two technical fouls and ensuing ejection vs. Central Connecticut St. on Thursday night. The Wagner College athletic department has a policy which dictates that any Seahawk coach who is ejected from a game must sit out the following contest. Associate Head Coach Kenyon Spears took over the head coaching duties for this game. Fifth-year senior guard Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS/ Olathe East) took over sole possession of the No. 1 spot on the Wagner all-time three-point field goals made list. His second half trifecta gave him 271 for this career, which broke a tie with Dedrick Dye (1999-2003) who hit 270 three-point field goals. Mount St. Mary's wore throwback uniforms from the school's 1962 NCAA College Division National Championship team as part of the season-long Centennial Celebration of Mount basketball. Wagner is now 14-5 against the Mount at Knott Arena and 25-13 all-time against the Mountaineers.
