Staten Island, NY – Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) nailed two clutch jumpers with the shot clock winding down as Wagner shot a season-high 60.4% from the field in running past Yale 83-74 in front of a spirited crowd of 1,104 at the Spiro Sports Center.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 5-2 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 2-5.
With Wagner leading 68-63, Smith nailed a three-point jumper with one second left on the shot clock to make it 71-63 with 4:11 left. On the ensuing Yale possession, Smith came up with a steal and fed sophomore forward Clifton Spiller (Pleasantville, NJ/ Holy Spirit) who was streaking ahead of the field for a breakaway dunk to put the Seahawks up 73-63. The Bulldogs answered with an 11-3 run capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Travis Pinick, which drew the Bulldogs to within 76-74 with 1:01 left.
Smith then hit another jumper with the shot clock winding down, a fall-away 15-footer while heavily guarded, to put Wagner up 78-74 with 32 seconds left. Smith's dramatic jumper ignited a game-ending 7-0 run which sealed the win and fashioned the nine-point victory. Fifth-year senior guard

Doug Elwell (Staten Island, NY/ Monsignor Farrell) played a solid floor game, totaling seven points, two assists and block. Elwell sent the crowd into delirium by capping the victory with a breakaway slam dunk with two seconds left in the game. Mundweiler and Smith tied for team-high honors in assists with five apiece. Yale was paced in scoring by guard Alex Zampier's game-high 25 points while forward Ross Morin added 16 points eight rebounds. Wagner shot a sizzling 70% on 14-of-20 shooting in the second half en route to the win. Wagner dished out 20 assists on 29 made baskets.
Drummond's scored 12 points in the opening half as Wagner held a 38-33 lead at intermission. Both teams were hot from the field in the opening stanza with Wagner hitting 54% from the field and Yale checking in at 52%.
Wagner is next in action on Saturday, December 13 as the Seahawks host Quinnipiac in the NEC opener.
NOTES - After scoring in double figures just five times in his three previous seasons as a Seahawk and never in consecutive games, Drummond has now scored double digits in four straight games and is averaging 13.8 points per game during this stretch. Smith has now scored 996 career points, just four away from the 1,000-point mark. The 83 points scored by Wagner matches a season-high set on Nov. 29 at Bucknell and the 20 assists also ties a season high, which were also set vs. Bucknell.
