THE MATCHUP

Wagner (5-3) plays its third and final game this season vs. a member of the Ivy League when the Seahawks host the Brown University Bears (4-5) in a 4:00 pm tilt on Sunday, December 21. The Seahawks are coming off a 71-63 home loss to Quinnipiac in Wagner's NEC opener back on Dec. 13. The Bears, meanwhile, have not been in action since Dec. 9 when they upended Hartford 72-62 at home. These teams met last season in Rhode Island and the Seahawks survived a nail-biter, edging the Bears 64-63 on Nov. 28, 2007. Wagner was led by its since-graduated trio of seniors, as guard Mark Porter led the way with 23 points while post players Durell Vinson and James Ulrich scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. There have been eight meetings between the schools all-time and all of them have taken place in each of the last eight seasons. The series between the schools, which began on Nov. 17, 2000 with a 122-91 Wagner win, is tied at 4-4. Last season, the Bears went 19-10, were second in the Ivy League at 11-3, and competed in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational.

THE COACHES
Wagner College head coach Mike Deane is in his 25th season as a head coach and his sixth as the head man of the Seahawks. He holds an overall coaching mark of 421-296, having eclipsed the 400-win plateau last season. His 416 wins entering the season ranked him 27th among all active coaches. In his sixth season at Wagner, Deane is 79-76 on Grymes Hill. In 2007-08, Wagner delivered a memorable and milestone season, recording that 23-8 overall record and a 15-3 mark in the NEC, which was good for second place. The 23 wins set a school record for most wins in a season, besting the old mark of 21 wins accomplished on three occasions, 1967-68, 1978-79 and 2002-03.

Jesse Agel is in his first season at Brown head coach after serving as an assistant there for two seasons. Prior to arriving at Brown, Agel was a 17-year assistant coach at Vermont. The 46-year-old Agel (pronounced A-gull) assisted coach Craig Robinson at Brown for the last two years, helping the Bears register a school-record 19 victories in 2007-2008, while gaining a berth in the post-season College Basketball Invitational. The Bears finished second in the Ivy standings with an 11-3 mark, winning 10 of their last 11 regular season games. Robinson was named the head coach at Oregon St. following last season and was succeeded by Agel. During his 17-year stint at Vermont, Agel was the architect of the Catamount's recent success on the basketball court. A 1984 graduate of Vermont, Agel was the associate head coach at Vermont for eight years under head coach Tom Brennan.

Wagner-Quinnipiac Recap
Wagner dropped its only game last week, losing its NEC opener to Quinnipiac 71-63 on Saturday night. The Seahawks jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead but the Bobcats weathered the early run and seized a 30-26 halftime lead en route to the victory. Senior forward Llew Radford (Newport News, VA/ Heritage) tossed in 17 points and added seven rebounds for the Seahawks. Fifth-year senior guard Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS/ Olathe East) scored all 12 of his points in the second half while junior center Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/ Hoboken) added a season-high 11 points and five rebounds.

Smith Hits 1,000-Point Mark, Nears 500 Rebounds
Fifth-year senior forward Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) scored eight points and, in the process, became the 36th player in Wagner history to score 1,000 points. Coming into the game needing four points to hit the magical figure, Smith now stands at 1,004 career points. Smith has pulled down 481 career rebounds, leaving him just 19 shy of cracking the 500-rebound plateau for his career.

Mundweiler Movin' Up
Mundweiler should join Smith in the 1,000-point club shortly. The sharp-shooter has scored 959 points in his Seahawk career, leaving him 41 shy of 1,000. Mundweiler is now up to 237 three-pointers made in his career, which is second on the all-time Wagner list behind Dedrick Dye (1999-2003), who nailed 270 jumpers from beyond the arc.

Senior Leadership
Wagner has been led all season by its quartet of seniors. Radford leads the balanced scoring lineup at 13.4 points per game, followed by Mundweiler (13.3), Smith (12.5) and point guard Jamal Drummond (9.8), whose four-game double-digit scoring streak ended with a nine-point outing vs. Quinnipiac. Radford leads the Seahawks in rebounding at 8.5 per game while Drummond leads in assists at 3.5 per outing. Despite the fact Wagner began its winter break last week, the 1,390 fans in attendance at the Quinnipiac game on Dec. 13 was a season high.
