Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) poured in 21 points and fellow fifth-year senior
Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS/ Olathe East) added 17 to lead Wagner to a gritty 65-62 victory over Stony Brook.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-1 on the season while Stony Brook falls to 1-2.
In the first half, Wagner held seven-point leads on several occasions but Stony Brook guard
Chris Martin drained a three-pointer with one second left in the half to cut the deficit Seahawks led 32-28 at the half which gave Stony Brook momentum, setting up a nip-and-tuck affair second half.
Stony Brook opened the second half with a 10-3 spurt to take a 38-35 lead on a layup by center Dallis Joyner with 14:48 left in the game. Mundweiler responded on the ensuing with an NBA-length three-pointer to tie the game at 38-38 with 14:37 left in the game.
Stony Brook forward Tommy Benton tied the game tied the game at 53-53 with a free throw with 5:26 left and put the Seawolves on top 54-53 with 5:26 left. Wagner then took the lead for good on a driving layup by Smith with 4:54 left which made it 55-54 Seahawks. The Smith bucket ignited a decisive 10-4 run, which was capped by a Smith free throw with 1:18 left. Giving Wagner a 63-58 lead. A Martin jumper made it 63-60 with 1:03 left.
The Seahawks then came up with two big defensive stops. When Joyner missed a jumper, Stony Brook got the offensive rebound but guard Bryan Dougher's rushed three-pointer with eight second s left missed. Redshirt junior guard
Doug Elwell (Staten Island, NY/ Monsignor Farrell) then iced the game by sinking two free throws with six seconds remaining. Benton hit a jumper at the buzzer for Stony Brook to fashion the three-point final margin.
The Seahawks owned a huge advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Seawolves 34-22 while shooting a solid 54% from the field in a game that featured six ties and four lead changes.
Senior forward
Llew Radford (Newport News, VA/ Heritage), bidding for his third consecutive double-double, came up just short as he contributed 11 points and nine rebounds while fifth-year senior guard
Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD/ McDonogh) added six point, three assists, two blocks and one steal.
Wagner has now won two straight games and has a quick turnaround as the Seahawks host Loyola Marymount on Monday night in a 7:00 pm tip-off at the Spiro Center.
NOTES – Smith is now up to 949 career points, leaving him just 51 points shy of the 1,000-point mark. Wagner now leads the all-time series with Stony Brook, 4-1.
