HAMDEN, Conn. — Wagner field hockey traveled to Quinnipiac on Friday and defeated the Bobcats on the road, 2-1. Both teams entered the game 2-0 in NEC play, with Wagner taking sole possession of first place in the conference standings after the win.
The first quarter came and went with neither team able to find the back of the net, but that wasn't without pressure from the Quinnipiac offense. The Bobcats put up five shots in the opening frame with two on target, but senior goalkeeper
Mia DiGenova kept the game scoreless with a pair of saves.
The scoring opened in the second quarter, when the Bobcats danced around the Wagner defense and put the ball past the line for a 1-0 lead.
The Seahawks weren't able to find the equalizer until the second half, when they drew a penalty corner mid-way through the third quarter. Sophomore defender
Julia de Leeuw took the initial shot from distance, and freshman midfielder
Gabrielle Childs tipped the shot in to tie the game at one.
The game remained tied until ten minutes to go in the final quarter. The Seahawks drew a penalty corner, senior
Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez injected the pass across to de Leeuw who wound up and found the back of the net from just inside the shooting circle.
Her goal gave Wagner a 2-1 lead, which held until the final whistle. DiGenova shut out the Bobcats in the second half, making three saves on four shots, and finishing the day with six.
The Seahawks will return to the field on Friday, Oct. 9, when they will host Sacred Heart at the Wagner Field Hockey Complex starting at 3 p.m.
