STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College field hockey team fell to Big 10 member Rutgers by a score of 7-1 in the Seahawks' 2026 home opener on Sunday.

The Seahawks (0-2, 0-0 NEC) found the back of the cage following a tap-in from junior Romy Matthies to start the third quarter. Wagner attempted five shots as a team, with two on target. 

For Matthies, Sunday's score marked the fourth of her Seahawk career. Along with Matthies, senior Floortje Leunisse and sophomore Julia de Leeuw attempted shots. Three of the four Seahawks penalty corner chances occurred in the third. 

The Scarlet Knights (1-1, 0-0 Big 10) jumped out to a three goal lead at the end of the first half. After giving up a score to the Seahawks, Rutgers scored four unanswered goals as the Scarlet Knights scored twice in both the third and fourth quarters. Rutgers took 18 shots with 12 on target, and recorded five assists among its seven goals.

Rutgers attempted six penalty corners compared to Wagner's four.

In net for Wagner, senior Mia DiGenova stopped five shots for the second consecutive game. 

Next up, the Green & White host CAA member Hofstra on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Field Hockey Complex. Start time between the Seahawks and the Pride is set for 3:00 p.m.
