Baseball Wins Four Straight with Road Win at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. — Wagner is on a four-game win streak after a 16-11 win on the road at Princeton that saw the Seahawks score eight runs in the eighth.

Scoring across the first four frames and adding those eight in the eighth before tacking on a solo run in the ninth, Wagner tied its highest scoring game of the season with the win and has now scored 31 runs in two days after a 15-11 win over Lafayette on Tuesday.

It was a massive offensive output that saw sophomore Matt Sutera and junior Josiah Ross finish with four RBIs apiece, while junior Dylan Immel went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Wagner finished with 16 hits to Princeton's 11, with five Seahawks logging a multi-hit game. Three Wagner hitters walked twice and the teal totaled five extra-base hits. Ross was exceptional across the board, 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, two stolen bases, a double and a walk.

Sophomore righty William Grayson gets the win, now 1-0 this season, throwing an inning in relief for Wagner as one of five arms used on Wednesday. Redshirt junior Braden Lowe was most efficient, going the final 1.1 innings and holding Princeton scoreless while allowing just one hit and striking out one.

Graduate Lukas Torres, 1-for-2 on Wednesday with a pair of walks, scored the first run of the game after being hit by a pitch and heading home on a sacrifice fly from junior Joseph Mennella. Freshman Brendan McLoughlin scored the game's second run on an error at third base after hitting a one-out single up the middle.

A walk, double and walk in the third saw sophomore Jayden Alvarez to the plate with the bases loaded with one out, scoring Immel on an RBI-groundout. The bases were loaded again when Torres was hit for a second time, but were promptly cleared on a three-RBI triple from Sutera that marked his first of the season. Princeton got on the board in the bottom of the frame with three runs on two hits, but left two stranded and ended the third with Wagner leading 6-3.

Ross added an RBI single in the fourth to score Immel to put the Seahawks up 7-3, then a pair of singles and a passed ball in the fourth allowed Princeton to move runners and it added two runs on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch, trailing by just two. It was a scoreless fifth for both teams, then the Tigers opened the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive hits, combined with a fielder's choice and an error to score a pair of runs. The game was tied 7-7 heading to the seventh.

Princeton took the lead for the first time in the seventh, hitting a two-run home run to go up 9-7, but the Seahawks had more offense left in the tank.

Wagner jumped on a pitching change from the Tigers, opening the eighth with a single, walk, two more singles, an RBI walk and a two-RBI double to score four runs and go up 11-9, forcing Princeton to go back to its bullpen. After another pitching change, Ross hit a two-RBI single to break the game open 13-9, stealing second and third then scoring on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout from Sutera gave Wagner the 13-9 lead it would carry to the bottom of the frame.

Princeton added a pair of runs in the eighth but it was not enough to match Wagner's offensive explosion. An RBI double from Ross scored the final run for the Seahawks, putting the team's run total at 31 across its two midweek games.

Next up, Wagner has the second of three consecutive road weekends, traveling to Princess Anne, Maryland to take on UMES in a weekend NEC series. Game one on Friday, April 24 is set for a 3 p.m. EDT first pitch.
