WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — No. 2 Wagner men's tennis defeated No. 6 Le Moyne 4-1 in the NEC semifinal on Friday to advance to the NEC Championship match.
This will be the Seahawks' third championship appearance in program history, and the first since 2019, when they lost to Bryant University.
In the doubles round, senior
Sebastian Dobson and graduate student
Tom Lamers got Wagner off to a good start with a 6-2 win on court 3. Later, the first doubles pairing of sophomore
Eddie Schmidt and redshirt freshman
Lukas Escher won their match on court 1 by the same score, giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead going into the singles round.
Escher and sophomore
Joshua Zhao won their singles matches in straight sets on courts 2 and 6 respectively. However, the Dolphins had taken one-set leads on every other court, putting Wagner's 3-1 lead in jeopardy.
Lamers and Schmidt would each win their second set to tie their matches, but it was senior
Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez who finished his comeback first. After dropping his first set 1-6, Rodriguez won each of the next twelve games played, which ended when his opponent lobbed a shot over the end line. Rodriguez's consecutive 6-0 set wins clinched the fourth and final point needed to send Wagner to the championship round.
Men's tennis will look to join women's soccer and women's water polo, as the third Wagner team to win a conference championship this season.
The No. 2 Seahawks will face defending back-to-back champion No. 1 Binghamton in the championship round on Saturday, April 18. The matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs since March 15, 2024. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Mercer County Tennis Courts.
