SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team swept their doubleheader against Le Moyne on Saturday, jumping 3.5 games ahead of the Dolphins in the NEC Standings.
The Seahawks jumped in front early, thanks to an RBI single from senior shortstop
Payton Janicki, which scored senior right fielder Lea Rachel from second base.
That would be the only run scored by either side until the fifth inning. After junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo singled to get on base, Janicki swung at the very next pitch and sent it high over the center field wall. Her home run gave her three RBIs in the game, and it gave Wagner a 3-0 lead.
Trujillo would collect an RBI in the top of the seventh with an RBI single of her own, to extend the Wagner lead to 4-0. She would finish the first game with three hits in four plate appearances.
Freshman starting pitcher
Samantha Lotus kept the Le Moyne bats silent through the first six innings, only surrendering her first run on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. But she bounced back and struck out the final batter to secure the 4-1 win. Lotus finished with four strikeouts in the complete game, and lowered her ERA to 2.99.
The second game didn't start as well for the Seahawks, as Le Moyne scored two runs on a double in the second inning, giving the Dolphins their first lead of the doubleheader. But they answered back in the next inning with four unearned runs, all with two outs.
Janicki continued her impressive day at the plate with another two-run hit, tying the game before sophomore designated player
Alayna Giampolo reached on an error allowing two more runs to score.
Wagner led 4-2 after three innings, which preceded a seven-run outburst in the very next inning. Janicki collected her third RBI of the second game with a single, then sophomore right fielder
Taylor Reynolds blew the game open with a three-run, bases-clearing double. One more run in the inning gave the Seahawks an 11-2 lead, which they would hold until the end of the game in the fifth inning.
Junior starting pitcher
Karson Zavala struck out six batters in the shortened game, and collected her 10th win of the season. Janicki finished the doubleheader with six hits and six RBIs, including a 4-4 performance in game two of the twin bill.
The Seahawks will look to sweep the Le Moyne series tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on NEC Front Row.
