Karson Zavala Named NEC Pitcher of the Week; Samantha Lotus Named NEC Co-Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Junior pitcher Karson Zavala earned NEC Pitcher of the Week, and freshman pitcher Samantha Lotus earned Co-Rookie of the Week for their performances this past week, the NEC announced on Tuesday.

For Zavala, this is her third Pitcher of the Week award this season, and the fifth of her career. In the non-conference portion of the week, she pitched 2 innings across two games, struck out four batters, and was the pitcher of record in the Seahawks' win against Iona on March 26.

Against conference opponent New Haven, Zavala pitched a complete-game shutout in the first game of the series. She collected 10 punch outs and didn't walk a single batter in the win, then followed that up with four innings in the series finale, allowing only one earned run.

In total, she struck out 17 batters over 13 innings, allowed zero walks and picked up three pitcher wins.

For Lotus, she shares her Rookie of the Week award with Le Moyne's Kayla Dunkerley. This is the first NEC award of Lotus' career, and the first time a Wagner freshman has won rookie of the week since former infielder Natalie Del Ponte won it in 2019.

Lotus started the week with 10 and two thirds innings, including a six-strikeout performance against Stony Brook on March 25. She allowed just three earned runs during the mid-week contests, and walked only two batters.

Against New Haven, Lotus followed up Zavala's complete-game shutout with a complete-game shutout of her own, surrendering only four hits and three walks, while striking out a trio of batters. In the series finale, Lotus came in to relieve Zavala and earned the save, allowing only one base runner in three innings of work.

Additionally, junior infielder Sydnie Trujillo earned her third Prime Performer nod of the season. In six games, she collected six hits in 13 at-bats, drew four walks, drove in four RBIs, and had two-multi hit games.

The Seahawks will return to the diamond play on Tuesday, March 31, when they take on Rutgers at 6 p.m. The game will take place at the Rutgers Softball Complex, and will air on the Big Ten Network +.
