STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team defeated New Haven 8-2 on Sunday, completing their first NEC sweep of the season.
Junior starting pitcher
Karson Zavala got the nod one day after pitching a complete-game shutout, but could not keep the scoreless streak going as she surrendered an unearned run off an RBI double in the top of the first. The Seahawks got the run right back in the bottom of the frame, when junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo collected a two-out RBI single.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the third inning. After consecutive singles and a fielder's choice, Trujillo and senior shortstop
Payton Janicki each singled in a run to put Wagner up 3-1. Two batters later, sophomore left fielder
Lilly Banse smacked a triple the opposite way and brought in two more runs. After the Chargers scored a run on an RBI single in the top of the fourth, the Seahawks led 5-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wagner loaded the bases for freshman pinch-hitter
Emma Chambers. On the first pitch she saw, she singled through the left side and brought in two more runs. Another run came in on a wild pitch, giving the Seahawks an 8-2 lead, which would hold until the game went final. The win improved Wagner to 7-2 in the conference.
Zavala would come out of the game after the fourth inning, surrendering only one earned run in her start, striking out three. Freshman pitcher
Samantha Lotus came in relief in the fifth inning, fresh off of her own complete-game shutout on Saturday. She extended her scoreless-inning streak to 10 innings with a three-inning save, only allowing one hit in Sunday's outing.
The Seahawks will return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 31, when they will visit Rutgers for a mid-week non-conference match up. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will air on the Big Ten
