STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner College junior attacker Danny McMahon scored a sudden-death overtime goal to help the Seahawks defeat the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday on Hameline Field.
Junior Terry Farrell found McMahon in front of the crease just under two minutes into the first overtime period, and McMahon did the rest, scoring his eighth goal of the season.
The Seahawks (4-5, 2-1 NEC) held the Lakers (2-9, 0-3 NEC) scoreless in the first quarter while tacking on two goals themselves. Junior Ian Muchineuta and senior Max Frissora were responsible for Wagner's first quarter scores.
Both sides put up two goals in the second quarter as Wagner held a 4-2 lead at the break. Graduate student Theo Kostakos and senior Smith Callaghan scored their first goals of the day in the second frame.
Wagner's lone goal in the third period came courtesy of Callaghan on a man-up opportunity. The Seahawks held the Lakers to just one goal, as the two teams entered the fourth in a 5-3 game in favor of Wagner.
In the fourth, the Lakers scored three unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead. Mercyhurst recorded 17 shots in the quarter. Kostakos netted his second of the game with 6:34 remaining to make it a 6-6 game.
In overtime, McMahon converted his game-winner on Wagner's second possession.
Junior Angus Snow saved a career-high 20 shots while adding two ground balls and one caused turnover in his fourth win of the season.
Defensively, Wagner caused eight turnovers, with sophomore Cole Yoshioka recording a team-high three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Muchineuta picked up six ground balls to go along with his one goal and one caused turnover.
With the win, the Green & White have won four of their last five games.
Next up, Wagner travels to Cleveland State for a noon start on Saturday, April 4 on Krenzler Field.
