STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College men's lacrosse team defeated conference opponent Detroit Mercy by a score of 9-8 on Hameline Field on Saturday morning.
The Seahawks (3-5, 1-1 NEC) scored four goals in the first quarter while holding the Titans (1-7, 0-2 NEC) scoreless after the opening frame.
After 15 minutes, senior Jake Mitchell scored two goals while junior Danny McMahon and graduate student Theo Kostakos both accounted for one goal each.
Detroit Mercy responded with two goals of its own before McMahon and freshman Dylan Popehn found the back of the net in the second period.
At the half, the Seahawks held a 6-2 lead.
In the third period, Detroit Mercy scored four goals of its own while holding Wagner scoreless. The Titans tied the game at 6-6 with just over two minutes left in the third.
In the final period of action, senior Max Frissora scored his third goal of the season to give the Seahawks a 7-6 lead on a Popehn assist.
Detroit Mercy answered to make it 7-7 less than two minutes later. Midway through the period, Mitchell scored his third goal of the game a few possessions before junior Damon Clark sealed the win for the Green & White with his second goal of the campaign.
The Titans could only score one more goal and fall to the Seahawks, 9-8.
Mitchell scored three points on his three goals. Popehn, Kostakos, and McMahon finished with two points, while Clark, Frissora, and Callaghan all recorded one point.
Defensively, senior Angus Snow earned 12 saves to put his season total at 84. Senior Nico Kross, Tristan McMahon, and junior Colin Sabia all caused two turnovers each. Sabia also collected three ground balls.
As a team, Wagner capitalized one of its two man-up opportunities while holding Detroit Mercy to one man-up goal on four attempts.
Wagner continues NEC play as the Seahawks host Mercyhurst for a noon start on Saturday, March 28 on Hameline Field.
