VILLANOVA, Pa. – The No. 20 Wagner women's water polo team battled through an intense Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest on Saturday afternoon, ultimately falling to No. 25 Villanova 15–14 in overtime at the Villanova Swim Complex. The result marked Villanova's first victory over Wagner since 2015, ending Wagner's long winning streak in the series.
Wagner opened the contest with an explosive first quarter as the teams matched each other goal-for-goal. The Seahawks received early contributions from junior
Maylen Sampedro Tarela, freshman
Makayla Ulmer-Lutudromu, junio Ana Arias Pérez, and junior
Catherine Mentz, helping Wagner keep pace as the period ended tied 4–4.
Villanova gained a slight edge in the second quarter, outscoring Wagner 3–2 to take a 7–6 lead into halftime. The Seahawks continued to find scoring opportunities during the frame behind efforts from Arias Pérez and Sampedro Tarela, keeping the contest within reach heading into the second half.
Wagner responded in the third quarter, scoring three times, where Arias Pérez completed a hat trick and senior
Magali Ogg and Ulmer-Lutudromu each found the back of the net. The Seahawks' offensive push evened the score once again heading into the final period.
Both teams continued to exchange goals in the fourth quarter, with Wagner receiving additional scoring contributions highlighting once again Sampedro Tarela and Arias Pérez, as the contest finished regulation tied 12–12, forcing overtime.
In the extra period, Villanova managed to convert three scoring opportunities while Wagner added two goals of its own, but the Wildcats ultimately held on to secure the 15–14 overtime victory.
