ORLANDO, Fla. — The Wagner softball team began the Charge On Classic with a 9-3 win against Florida A&M.
The Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After junior second baseman
Leilani Gonzales reached base with a double, sophomore center fielder
Sam Estrada knocked her in with a two-out, opposite-field single.
Wagner followed that up with a five-run third inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo singled, sophomore right fielder
Taylor Reynolds walked, Gonzales grounded out, senior catcher
Brityn Buchanan hit a sacrifice fly, and Estrada reached on an error. Each of those plays resulted in a run, which gave Wagner a 6-0 lead.
That would be more than enough for freshman pitcher
Samantha Lotus, as an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth was her only blemish through the first six innings. Regardless, they would add three more runs in the top of the seventh. Gonzales picked up her second RBI with a bases-loaded walk, then freshman center fielder
Zoe Totaro reached on an error and plated two more runs.
After Lotus gave up a pair of unearned runs in the last inning, junior pitcher
Jill Theodorou came in and finished the game with a pop fly to first base. Lotus finished the night with just the one earned run on her line, tacking on six strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
The Seahawks will continue their Florida trip tomorrow with two games. They'll begin the day against Dartmouth at 11:30 a.m., then they'll take on hosts UCF at 4:30 p.m. Both games will stream on ESPN +.
