STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner women's water polo team put together a strong four-quarter performance to earn a 16-10 victory over Iona, showcasing balanced scoring and a decisive third-quarter surge.
Wagner came out sharp in the opening quarter, controlling possession and setting the pace early to take a 4-3 lead. The Seahawks continued to apply pressure in the second period, stringing together quality offensive possessions while staying solid defensively. The team extended their advantage to 10-6 at halftime with key goals from senior Maggie Pike, senior Magali Ogg and junior Maylen Sampedro Tarela.
The turning point came in the third quarter, when Wagner's offense erupted for three more goals where junior Catherine Mentz completed her hat trick of the game. The Seahawks pushed the tempo in transition and finished efficiently, creating separation and stretching the lead to 13-8 entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Wagner remained composed, matching Iona goal-for-goal to close out the contest. The Seahawks added two more scores in the final frame while limiting any sustained run, sealing the 16-10 victory.
Up next: Wagner travels back to New England to compete at the Harvard Invite on Feb. 28, opening with a matchup against Bucknell before facing Brown later in the afternoon.
