Women's Basketball Drops Conference Meeting at Saint Francis

LORETTO, Pa. – The Wagner College women's basketball team fell to the Saint Francis Red Flash by a score of 75-67 at DeGol Arena in the Seahawks' third conference game of the year.

The Seahawks (6-8, 2-1 NEC) found themselves in a 39-26 deficit at the half. In the first half, the Red Flash (1-13, 1-2 NEC) possessed a 9-4 advantage in points off of turnovers and a 8-2 advantage in second chance points. 

During the first 20 minutes of action, Saint Francis shot 12-14 (85.7%) from the foul line and 5-14 (35.7%) from beyond-the-arc; comparatively, Wagner shot 4-12 (33.3%) from the charity stripe and 0-4 (0.0%) from behind the three-point line. 

Seniors Irene Fernandez de Caleya and Hawa Balde-Camara both had four first half points to lead the Seahawks offense. 

In the third quarter, Wagner fought back and made it a two-point game with 2:48 left in the period. Wagner scored 20 points in the third alone, led by junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor who had five of those points. 

The Seahawks shot 10-18 (55.6%) from the floor in the third while the Red Flash shot 6-13 (46.2%). The Green & White outscored the Red Flash by nine in the frame to make it a 53-49 contest after three.

Efficient fourth quarter foul shooting from Saint Francis helped seal the victory, as the Red Flash outscored the Seahawks 22-18 in the final period to prevail, 75-67, to earn their first win of the season.

Individually, Doyinsola Modesayor finished with a team-high 14 points while sophomore Keana Foz scored 13 points to go along with nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Fernandez de Caleya and Balde-Camara chipped in 10 points each.

As a team, Wagner shot 25-62 (40.3%) from the field, but 0-8 (0.0%) from three and 17-37 (45.9%) from the foul line. This is the first time the Seahawks have failed to hit a three in a game since Feb. 9, 2024 against FDU.

Next up, the Green & White continue their western Pennsylvania road trip with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off at Mercyhurst on Thursday, Jan. 10 on Owen McCormick Court.
