STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College women's basketball team heads across the Verrazzano to LIU for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Wagner (8-10, 4-3 NEC) climbed to above .500% in conference play following a 59-45 victory over Le Moyne on Thursday.
The Seahawks led 35-15 at the half thanks to a 19-4 second quarter while turning the ball over only eight times and forcing 19 Stonehill miscues on the other end.
Senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds, while redshirt senior Priscila Varela added 13 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
Sophomore Keana Foz chipped in 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals providing a steady inside presence. Junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor scored eight points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Seahawks turned defense into offense with 22 points off Le Moyne's 19 turnovers, while only surrendering four points off miscues and turning the ball over only eight times
Since the start of conference play, the Seahawks rank atop the NEC in steals per game with 9.22 and first in the conference in blocks per game with 3.33.
Since the start of the new year, Foz ranks third in steals per game within the NEC at 2.2 steals per contest.
Senior Hawa Balde-Camara sits second in the conference in blocks per game with 1.0. Both Foz and Balde-Camara ended last season in first place in their respective categories.
The Seahawks were picked to finish seventh in the conference's preseason coaches poll.
Last time out, LIU (11-7, 6-1 NEC) defeated Stonehill by a score of 72-59 on Thursday. Neil Harrow runs the helm of the LIU coaching staff and is in his first season with the Sharks.
Senior Kadidia Toure leads the Dolphins' offense averaging 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Toure leads the NEC in points, rebounds, blocks (1.3) and is tied in first in steals (1.0) per game.
Among the NEC, the Sharks rank first in scoring offense (70.1) and combined team rebounds (38.9). LIU was picked eighth in the NEC preseason coaches poll.
After taking on LIU, Wagner hosts CCSU for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off at the Spiro Sports Center on Jan, 29 at 5:00 p.m.
