BRONX, N.Y. – The Wagner men's water polo team traveled to the Bronx on Saturday for a MAWPC showdown, where they fell to Fordham with a final score of 21-9 at the Messmore Aquatic Center.
During the first quarter, sophomore
Smith Connors and junior
Patrick Ray each scored a goal, only a minute apart from each other. The Rams built momentum in the first half while the Seahawks battled back to keep pace.
The second quarter started with a 5-2 advantage from Fordham. Senior captain
Laszlo Strasser and sophomore
Matan Friedenberg each tallied a goal early to get Wagner on the board, ending the second quarter trailing 11-4. Strasser had a massive third quarter performance where he scored three goals. Despite the effort, Fordham carried a 16-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Seahawks showed resilience in the fourth quarter — Strasser scored half way through the fourth quarter, and two minutes before the end of the game, making it six total goals of the day for him. However, the Rams' offense proved too much to overcome and the final score was 21-9.
In goal, sophomore
Ian Conway kept Wagner in the contest with a strong performance, recording eight total saves against the Rams' offense.
Up next, the Seahawks will head west for the Gary Troyer Tournament in Claremont, California, beginning October 3 and wrapping up October 4. Wagner will square off against a strong field of West Coast opponents, including UC Irvine and Concordia Irvine, as they continue non-conference play and test themselves against ranked competition.
