Men's Water Polo Record-Breaking Win Highlights Bucknell Invite Weekend

LEWISBURG, P.A. – The Wagner men's water polo team delivered a record-breaking offensive performance and battled one of the league's top teams during their two-game invite at the Bucknell Invitational this weekend.

Game 1 Results: Wagner 30 – Mercyhurst 12

The Seahawks set a school-record of 30 goals in their Saturday morning opener against Mercyhurst, powering past the Lakers. Wagner raced out to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, building a 15-6 halftime cushion.

Senior captain Laszlo Strasser scored the most goals during the first quarter, finding the back of the net a total of 3 times. The team took the lead with the help from freshman Landon Castillo, senior Ryan Kerry, sophomore Smith Connors, junior Vince Varga, sophomore Matan Friedenberg, freshman Jonah Aguilera, and junior Gabe Johnson, who scored one goal each, finishing 10-2 at the end of the quarter.

Freshman Jacob Troy scored at the beginning of the second quarter, being it his first goal of the season and making the move to keep leading the game. The green and white entered halftime with a 15-6 lead.

Kerry, Connors, Troy, Aguilera, Johnson and freshman Aksel Gerhardstein, each, scored a goal during the third quarter, maintaining the leading pace and staying ahead of the Lakers 21-9.

During the last quarter Gerhardstein added three, while freshman Toby Zeeck and Castillo added two more goals each. Additional goals came from freshman Jackson McGuckin and freshman Senan Noonan.

Wagner's 30-goal outburst shattered the previous program single-game scoring record and highlighted the team's offensive depth.

Goals: Castillo (4), Gerhardstein (4), Strasser (3), Kerry (2), Connors (2), Varga (2), Friedenberg (2), Troy (2), Aguilera (2), Zeeck (2), Johnson (2), Carmon, McGuckin, Noonan

The Bison used a second-quarter run to edge ahead 6-5 at halftime. Wagner responded in the third with two goals from Strasser to stay within striking distance, trailing 10-7 heading into the fourth.

The Seahawks continued to fight in the final frame as Strasser found twice the back of the net again and, Castillo and Carmon, added their third goal of the match, but Bucknell held on for a 14-12 win.
