NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Wagner College field hockey team (3-5, 2-1 NEC) took down conference opponent Sacred Heart (3-5, 1-1 NEC) by a score of 1-0 on Friday afternoon on Johnson Field on the campus of Yale University.
After a scoreless and back-and-fourth first half, junior Floortje Leunisse found the back of the cage for the third time this season off of a Seahawk counter-attack up the right side of the field.
After sophomore goalkeeper Saar van Dalen kicked the ball out of Wagner's circle, sophomore Erika Parker found freshman Julie Povel, who then found junior Felicitas Herrero who passed it to Leunisse in front of the cage. Leunisse's first shot was saved, but her second attempt slipped past the Pioneers goalkeeper to grant the Seahawks a 1-0 lead early in the third quarter.
Leunisse applied constant pressure by putting four shots on target as Povel and senior Hailey Bianchino also recorded shots on target during the contest.
In the cage, van Dalen recorded her second shutout of the year and tallied four saves, bringing her season total to 46 saves.
As a team, Wagner took 16 shots with nine on target, and earned seven corner opportunities; comparatively, Sacred Heart attempted 14 shots with four on target, and earned eight corner opportunities.
The Pioneers attempted five of their eight corners in the fourth quarter, but the Seahawks' defense stayed strong late to secure the shutout.
Next up, the Green & White continue Northeast Conference play against Mercyhurst on Sunday, September 28. Game time is set to begin at noon at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
