Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College field hockey team (0-2, 0-0 NEC) fell to the #18 ranked University at Albany Great Danes (2-0, 0-0 America East) by a score of 3-1 in the Seahawks' 2025 home opener on Sunday afternoon.
Wagner struck first thanks to a penalty corner late in the first quarter. Freshman Julia de Leeuw found junior Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez near the goal after an insertion from sophomore Erika Parker to grant the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage with 1:18 to go in the frame.
In the second quarter, the Great Danes outshot the Seahawks 5-1, but three saves from sophomore Saar van Dalen held that same one-score lead for Wagner heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, UAlbany capitalized on two shot attempts less than three minutes apart to overtake Wagner and possess a 2-1 lead looking into the final quarter of play. Â
Three minutes into the fourth quarter, UAlbany scored its third goal to push the lead to a two-score game. In the end, the Great Danes prevailed by a final score of 3-1.
UAlbany applied the pressure towards Wagner's defense, garnering four penalty corners to the Seahawks' one while attempting 11 shots (eight on target) to the Seahawks' six (four on target).Â
Van Dalen finished the game with five saves for Wagner while Emma Peeters recorded three saves for UAlbany.Â
Along with Gonzalez-Lopez, senior Hailey Bianchino, junior Floortje Leunisse, junior Natalie McGivern, freshman Julie Povel, and freshman Riahna Pollard all attempted shots throughout the contest.Â
