Piscataway, NJ - The Wagner College field hockey team suffered a 1-5 defeat to the No. 16 ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Seahawks' season-opener on Friday morning.
At the half, the Scarlet Knights led by a score of 3-0. Junior Floortje Leunisse, last season's highest scorer for Wagner, found the back of the cage off of a rebound for the team's lone goal of the match with just under 10 minutes to play in the fourth.Â
Besides Leunisse, freshmen Noor van Duin and Riahna Pollard applied pressure offensively for the Green & White by both attempting shots on target during the contest.
Senior Claire Evans, junior Romy Matthies, sophomore Erika Parker, and freshman Julia de Leeuw all played the entirety of the game for the Seahawks.
In goal, the Northeast Conference's (NEC) reigning Goalkeeper of the Year saved eight shots in her sophomore season debut across her 60 minutes of action.Â
One day after being named onto the 2025 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Watchlist, the Netherlands native stopped four shots in the second quarter alone.
In the final quarter of play, Wagner outshot Rutgets, 4-3, while both sides had two corner opportunities.Â
Next up, the Green & White will host No. 18 ranked Albany for the Seahawks' 2025 home opener on Sunday, August 31 at 2:00 pm at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
