Women's Water Polo Defeats Marist, 14-11, To Capture Back-To-Back MAAC Titles

Poughkeepsie, NY - The top-seeded Wagner women's water polo team earned its 12th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo championship after defeating Marist, 14-11, in the championship game.

The title marks the Seahawks first back-to-back championship since their historic six-year title streak from 2014 to 2019. During that six year run, the Seahawks defeated Marist in each championship game.

Senior attacker Carlota Alonso, the MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, sparked the Seahawks early, scoring the first goal of the game to set the tone. Shortly after, sophomore center Catherine Mentz found the back of the net to give Wagner an early 2-0 lead. However, the Red Foxes responded with two quick goals to tie the game at 2-2.

The Seahawks then erupted with five unanswered goals, building a 7-2 lead with 5:13 remaining in the second quarter. Wagner continued to control the tempo and carried a 6-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter before holding an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Marist continued to battle in the third quarter, bringing the game within one, 9-8, with 3:37 left in the frame. Wagner answered back, as junior attacker Martina Parisi and senior Carlota Alonso each scored crucial goals to give the Green & White an 11-8 cushion heading into the final eight minutes.

In the fourth quarter, the Seahawks put the game away with strong finishing touches. Sophomore utility Alex Andrist, sophomore attacker Ana Arias, and Alonso each found the back of the net, helping Wagner close out the 14-11 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Francesca Sena, the MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, anchored the defense by spending all 32 minutes in goal and recording five saves to help secure the win.

Following the game, Carlota Alonso was named the MAAC Championship MVP, while junior attacker Magali Ogg and Francesca Sena were also selected to the MAAC All-Championship Team for their standout performances throughout the tournament.

With the win, the Seahawks advance to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their matchup during the NCAA Selection Show, scheduled for Monday, April 28 at 8:00 PM ET on NCAA.com. This year's NCAA Tournament will take place in Indianapolis, IN, hosted by Indiana University. The opening round is set for Wednesday, May 7, with the championship game scheduled for Sunday, May 11.

Last season, Wagner defeated Biola in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion UCLA in the first round.
