Baltimore, MD - The Wagner College men's tennis team continued its Baltimore road trip with a match up against Morgan State on March 9.
The Seahawks bid for a perfect weekend was halted as Morgan State claimed a 6-1 victory.
The Bears secured the doubles point with wins at #1 (6-4) and #2 (6-2). Freshmen
Eddie Schmidt and
Damian Janiszewski were locked in a tight battle at #3, serving at 5-5 when their match was halted due to the clinch.
In singles play, Janiszewski earned Wagner's lone victory of the afternoon at #2, battling to a 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 win.
Graduate student Carlos Rodriguez put up a strong fight at #1, taking the opening set 6-3 before falling in the next two, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman
Vibhu Challagundla also showed resilience, rallying from a set down before dropping a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set, 10-5.
"It was a disappointing afternoon for our men's team," said Wagner Head Coach
Jeff Menaker. "The doubles point was very tight, and the match could have played out differently had we taken #1 doubles and third sets at #1 and #5 singles. But credit to Morgan State—they were dominant on a few courts, which extended their lead too easily from my perspective."
The Seahawks return home to Staten Island for a March 15 NEC showdown against St. Francis (PA) at the College of Staten Island Indoor Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
